Music Raises My Hands
They experience music through their own movements. As their bodies receive the music’s vibrations, they start to move spontaneously. It must have happened similarly in their mothers’ wombs. Since they were completely protected there, in a comfortable environment, in soft liquid, musical movement must be associated with very pleasant memories. That is why it is infinitely important what kind of vibrations they receive there.
Kodály taught that musical education has to begin nine months before the child’s birth. He must surely have thought of the mother’s, the parents’ musical taste. As our bodies receive the music’s vibrations, so our souls receive the music’s spiritual message.
Due to the restricted space and the fixed posture within the womb, the mother may only feel a small part of the foetus’s musical movements. A great part of the movements must be the child’s inner reaction, probably intensive inner attention and imaginary movements. That is how I experience music during concerts where from the outside I may seem to be sitting without a stir, but inside I may well be flying.
In our civilization we still pay little attention to the foetus’s musical life, his/her responses to music. Yet there are limited research and many anecdotal studies, as well as observations, which prepare the way for further organized studies and research. We know for certain that even around their birth babies receive sound impulses to which they react even with their movements. There is growing interest from many professions, related to the many factors that influence gestation and birth including music.
